THE SHOE "ARMOIRE" A simple bookcase or pantry shelving unit can be the starting point for a shoe closet that will be more than a foot in the right direction. When outfitted with a decorative cover, this freestanding storage solution looks good enough to sit out in the open--whether in the bedroom, in a wide hallway, in a corner of the mudroom, or tucked at the back of a walk-in closet. Choose a unit with adjustable shelves so you can customize your storage to the sorts of shoes you own--short shelves for flats and slippers, tall shelves for heels and boots. Before installing the shelves, take inventory of your shoes and categorize them by season and the amount of space they take up. To make finding the right pair easier, keep shoes of similar styles and seasons on the same shelves.
